~Jenny's Story~

 

 

Jenny has had neck pain for years.

Jenny has two young children and works 4 days a week

at a desk. She try's to make the gym three times a week, mixing light weights and cardio training.

However she is now experiencing pain when she lifts light weights to shoulder height and is not

sleeping well due to neck pain.

 

She has been having a relaxation massage focusing on her neck every fortnight but it seems to be getting worse. Jenny decides to book in for

REMEDIAL MASSAGE.

 

She is a bit scared as she has been told it is very painful,

but she also really needs help as the neck pain and shoulder pain

is now interfering with even making dinner and ironing.

 

Jenny attends her booked massage session feeling quite anxious but desperate for help. Her therapist listens to her concerns and understands she is already in pain and explains to Jenny how she would like to address the problem.

 

After a full assessment it is clear that Jenny's main issues are extremely tight rotator cuff muscles, extremely tight triceps and biceps and pectoralis major muscle (the chest).

     

      Jenny has only ever had her back and neck massaged and not her arms or chest. She is a little doubtful as the pain is in her neck and back of shoulder, but she decides to try this different approach, as all the massages she has had this far only make her feel better for one or two days. Jenny is grateful her therapist seems to understand how anxious she is about 'getting worse' and being 'very sore' after her massage and a bit unsure about someone working on her chest.

 

           The therapist encourages Jenny at any stage she can request changes to pressure, or even decide to stop working on the chest if she is uncomfortable, and that her goal for the session is that Jenny gets up and feels 'So Much Better'!

 

As the massage starts to unfold and Jenny relaxes she is really surprised how gentle the work is and even more surprised to feel incredibly tender in some of the muscles she felt sure were NOT involved in her neck and shoulder issue!

      As the therapist clearly cares, and is working carefully and gently and much deeper than Jenny has ever experienced, Jenny starts to really relax, trust, and take a few deep breaths, focusing on the music and hoping for real changes to her neck and shoulders.

 

The therapist has set realistic expectations,

letting Jenny know that 7 years of neck and shoulder problems wont be resolved in one hour,

but that she is confident Jenny will get up feeling

change and be encouraged to commit to a

treatment plan to see this 7 year problem

 confronted and resolved.

At the end of her massage Jenny is glad it was not too painful, but is doubtful that a massage that invested more time into her upper arms & chest than into the region she feels the pain,

(her 'traps' or top of shoulder, scapula's and her neck),

will really help relieve the intense ache she is living with.

 

However when she tentatively gets up to dress, she immediately realises her neck has no pain and her shoulders feel light & very different!

 

She has never experienced this after a massage before...

 

 

Her therapist explains that her treatment plan is every week for 4 weeks and then a reassessment to possibly move to every fortnight for another 4 sessions if needed to ensure the changes are long term.
